Chihuahuas - Why?

How on earth did they evolve? I thought dogs were meant to be hunting animals. These get bullied by cockroaches (though that can happen to me too). Saw one of these dimunitive pooches on the street the other day. It was scrabbling around on the pavement on the edge of it's lead (or perhaps leash?) desparate to get to wherever it was going. Didn't care at all about all the people trying to avoid stepping on it.

Getting trod on while also being at the low end of the food chain just makes me wonder how they survived so long. Was there some huge chihuahua used as a hunting dog sometime in the middle-ages which was then reduced into this toy dog as some sort of joke?

Whatever the answer, I think their time is coming. They're definitely town dogs built for small apartments but with inner-city populations growing they'll end up flat under someone's size 9's (or 42's).

Just thought I'd share it.
